NCDC Project*: The Good Son

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

This weekend I’m listening to my old Nick Cave CD’s. He was my musical hero in high school (I wore nothing but black for at least 3 years – what can I say, I’m a walking cliche).
Haven’t listened to his music in years and years, but I happily discovered it still sounds amazing, and now that I’m older and smarter I even appreciate the lyrics better.
Here’s the title song from The Good Son, reminds me of fall, of walking slowly to school…

NCDC* Project: Unknown Pleasures

I first heard a Joy Division song on mix tape given to me when I was 17 or so (thank god for big sisters and their boyfriends). It was exactly what I needed at that time.

I bought Unknown Pleasures, their first album, and was blown away. Still am – it’s brilliant.

Of course the genius cover design by Peter Saville didn’t hurt either.
Ian Curtis is one of those musicians that really touch me deeply with his lyrics and voice.

Do you, dear reader, happen to have a memory or a story related to Unknown Pleasures or Joy Division in general? I would love to read about it if you feel like sharing.

Something must be done! I declare a new blog project.

I want to start listening to the old CD’s again, those plastic thingies that used to be my pride and joy (they were especially useful when trying to impress boys).

Now they just sit there collecting dust (good thing I don’t have to impress boys anymore) (edit: good thing I have new ways of impressing boys).

So… I will  pull them from their comfortable place on the shelves one by one, listen, and hopefully get inspired to draw something just for them. A thank you gift of sorts.*

It will also be really nice if a personal memory jumps to your mind and you feel like sharing in the comments. You know how music throws you to different times + places.

One more request: could you help me find a really good name for this project?

* it’s actually a continuation of my final project from Bezalel , which I had a lot of fun doing.

This ↑ drawing is an old one, but relevant. The arrow points at the first CD I ever bought, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. I still remember very clearly my absolute a-m-a-z-e-m-e-n-t while listening to the album’s opening track:
